PORT DICKSON: A committee will be set up to probe the death of a participant of the Port Dickson International Triathlon yesterday.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the committee would be headed by the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali.

“The committee will look into, among others, if there was any breach of conditions or laws,” he said.

He expressed condolences to the family of Thram Wei Wong, 39, from Penang, who drowned while participating in the 750m swimming event at the triathlon.

Earlier, Syed Saddiq met Thram’s family members at the forensic unit of the Port Dickson Hospital.

“Fire and Rescue personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim but there was no response,” Port Dickson district police deputy chief DSP Mohd Faisal Mohd Noor said in a statement.

The victim was sent to the Port Dickson Hospital and was pronounced dead by a team of medical officers.

Meanwhile, 42-year-old Hong Kong national Jeffrey Yuen Chi Yuen has been reported missing after failing to return to the beach in the swimming event.

His wife lodged a report with the organisers after searching for him at the beach, in their hotel room and in the dining area.

His bicycle was left untouched at the station for the second part of the triathlon. A report was lodged at the mobile police unit and a search was mounted for the victim.
