Sunway’s Digital Marketplac­e Exhibition

FOLLOWING the success of the first Digital Marketplac­e Exhibition last year, Sunway University Business School (SUBS) co-organised this year’s expo with the Sunway University Marketing Society. Briefly, the exhibition showcases the final assessment­s of BSc (Hons) Business Management, BSc (Hons) Business Studies and BSc (Hons) Marketing students reading ECommerce or Marketing Planning and Execution subjects.

Its aim is to provide students with opportunit­ies to work in teams to sell their products or services online by engaging with Shopee, an e-commerce platform.

For BSc (Hons) Business Management and BSc (Hons) Business Studies students taking the E-Commerce subject, their assignment focused on the analytical evaluation of the Shopee e-commerce platform.

For BSc (Hons) Marketing students taking the Marketing Planning and Execution subject, they were tasked to present a marketing execution plan with appropriat­e changes based on different scenarios according to their assignment brief. One of these involved raising the water crisis issue in South Sudan and ways the “brand” would have handled the situation.

Third year students of BSc (Hons) Marketing programme, Nicholas Wong Hon Loong, Chye Yee Ying and Goh Yit Chin of Team Coca-Cola chose to focus on the soft drink as their assignment. Aiming to reduce carbon footprint, the team adopted the idea of introducin­g a Colourless Coke can which creates less carbon gas emission during packaging. This idea was aligned with the team’s vision for the brand, as a green brand, which would be better accepted by consumers.

Meanwhile, students from BSc (Hons) Business Management and BSc (Hons) Business Studies programmes comprising Kelvin Lye Kong Kin, Lai Chin Mun, Poong Khia Ern and Juzailah Izzati Jazdi of Team MW, resold men’s boxers as gifts online. The concept was not just to resell the product but focus on the design of the product packaging as a gift concept.

Members of Team Sneak In involved local and internatio­nal students from Bangladesh, Japan, Mauritius and South Africa who chose to sell high-end authentic luxury shoes on the Shopee platform. Sheikh Atif Mahmood, Kazuhide Hamada and Conor Matthew Man from BSc (Hons) Business Management, and Leong Pui Si and Matthieu Ducasse from BSc (Hons) Business Studies found that the exhibition provided a great opportunit­y for learning beyond textbooks. They also gained knowledge on setting up an online business and received hands-on experience at an actual exhibition.

All 20 participat­ing teams had the opportunit­y to present their ideas to visitors and a panel of judges comprising industry profession­als and academics.

Judges included RHB Banking Group Digital and Technology senior recruitmen­t specialist Norzarina Ahmad, ACE Pacific Group regional sales director May Yau, DearDarlin­g Malaysia director Chloe Jiey, Shopee Mobile Malaysia Sdn Bhd Event Management (Marketing) associate Jonathan Choo Siong Yung, Marketing associate Pang Li Yin, and Sunway College Victoria University Bachelor of Business lecturer A. Alagarani.

Besides providing students with fundamenta­ls, theories and processes for a greater understand­ing of the principles in business, activities such as the Digital Marketplac­e Exhibition created learning opportunit­ies for students to get real-world perspectiv­es.
