Zahid to be PAC chairman?

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s name is the only one being considered at this time for the position of chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong.

“Only those in the Opposition can be the chairman of PAC as stated in the Pakatan Harapan manifesto,” he said at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

“We must ask him if he wants the position. If he accepts, his appointment will be considered by the government and the Speaker.”

He added that the appointment of a chairman for PAC will be completed during this Parliament sitting.

Yesterday, Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming said an opposition MP would be considered for the post.

Ahmad Zahid said he will have to discuss the matter with parties in the opposition pact.

“I have not received any official notice to be the PAC chairman. Usually, the PAC chairman comes f rom t he government whereas the deputy chairman is from the opposition,” he said.

“I will have to discuss it with my colleagues i n Barisan Nasional, Umno and PAS on what the next step to take will be.”

He said that a decision will be made when he receives an official notice as he has only read about the matter in the media.
