MP to table motion against six EC members

> Move is to seek their resignations over election irregularities

- BY ELLY FAZANIZA

KUALA LUMPUR: Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong (pix) will table a motion in the Dewan Rakyat calling for six Election Commission (EC) officers to resign due to alleged irregularities, which occurred during the 14th general election (GE14). HE SAID the officers are the EC’s deputy chairman Tan Sri Othman Mahmood, Datuk Md Yusop Mansor, Datuk Abdul Aziz Khalidin, Sulaiman Narawi, Datuk K. Bala Singam and Datuk Leo Chong Cheong. His decision comes in the light of Bersih 2.0 findings that there were “existing preelection conditions” that had affected the general election, which were gerrymandering, voters’ list manipulation and political financing.

“During the GE14, Bersih had received 1,003 complaints, which include buying of votes, gift-giving, abuse of government assets, and issues related to early and postal votes.

“The issues raised by Bersih can be confirmed by my own experience in Malacca. For instance, I received a complaint by a voter who had voted in GE13 and GE14, but had the name removed. The individual was found to be “deceased” when checked by the EC although the person was standing beside me.”

He added a Royal Commission of Inquiry should be established to investigate the misconduct and for action to be taken against those responsible.

He is expected to propose a motion of no confidence on the six individuals to step down from their posts with immediate effect.
