‘Umno account freeze won’t affect campaign’

> We’ll use friendly approach to woo voters, says Najib

SHAH ALAM: Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said the freeze on Umno’s accounts as part of the ongoing 1MDB investigation will not affect the party’s campaign for the Sungai Kandis byelection.

Instead, the Pekan parliament member said Umno will use the friendly approach to woo voters for its candidate Datuk Lokman Noor Adam.

“Even though the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has frozen Umno’s accounts, we still have a chance of wresting the seat.

“In fact, we do not need a lot of money for this campaign as all we need to do is be more people-friendly. Reaching out to their hearts rather than spending lavishly on big gatherings Polling: Aug 4 might be a better approach for us,” Najib said during his walkabout with the party candidate in Sungai Kandis yesterday.

Najib said he would refrain from predicting the by-election results, saying the outcome lies with the voters of Sungai Kandis.

“However, based on my observation today, many of the voters are still friendly towards me and this is only my first visit here, so let’s just see what will happen,” he said when asked on the local reception over his visit.

Separately, PAS’ decision in not helping BN with its campaign might provide a great opportunity for PKR’s candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni in retaining the Sungai Kandis state seat for the party.

“With or without PAS helping BN with the campaigning, I am confident that I will come out top eventually and with an even higher majority than the general election,” he said during his daily media conference at the party’s operations centre here.

Asked how he came to that conclusion, Mohd Zawawi said this was based on voter feedback.
