Left high and dry by ‘Saudi Prince’
> Job scam victims fail to receive salaries after working in ‘international company’
KUALA LUMPUR: A group of locals are believed to have been conned by a man who claimed to be a Saudi Arabian prince who offered them attractive employment opportunities.
The man, believed to be an Iraqi refugee holding a UNHCR card, had promised them salaries between RM7,000 and RM15,000 depending on the job.
However, the 18 victims suspected something amiss when they did not receive their salaries.
MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said the man, in his early 50s, claimed that he was Prince Sheikh Prof Dr Al Mansour.
A victim, who wanted to be known as Wong, 39, said she came across a job vacancy advertisement on an employment portal in April.
Wong applied for personal assistant, administrator and IT manager posts at the AMRIG International Group (Malaysia).
“During the interview, the man had asked me to address him as ‘Royal Highness’ and he told me that the company has 33 subsidiaries involved in gold trade, oil and gas as well as marine and shipping,” she told a media conference at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department yesterday.
She started working on April 9 with a promised salary of RM7,000 per month.
The office was located on the 36th floor of Menara Maxis.
The company then moved after the it failed to pay rental which accumulated to RM120,000.
She did not receive her pay and tendered her resignation on July 2.
Another victim, who wanted to be known as Moi in his 60s, said a friend told him the man was an Iraqi refugee in Malaysia and not a Saudi prince as claimed.
The “prince” was last seen on July 2 and had disappeared after that.
The victims have lodged a police report on the matter.
