Classic elegance makes a comeback

Those not looking to put a foot out of line in the second half of 2018 need only follow three trends

USUALLY, at the haute couture shows the art of tailoring is overshadowed by an elaborate spectrum of designs. This time at the autumn/ winter 2018 shows in the French capital, things were different. Here's how the Paris Fashion Week's Couture shows are tackling sportswear fever in fashion.

A new elegance The most stunning impact made by this haute couture season was witnessing it recapture its own terrain: pure elegance.

Clare Waight Keller – who rose to global fame as the designer of Meghan Markle's wedding dress – paid homage to the recently deceased designer Hubert de Givenchy with a show featuring capes, slim-fit coats and dresses, all tailored to perfection.

Black is the new black With this new elegance, black took its rightful place as the most essential colour. Givenchy designs saw an array of blacks across coats, pants and dresses in a nod to the iconic evening dress of Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's", designed by Hubert de Givenchy, who died in March.

Hepburn's “Little Black Dress” is regarded as one of the most famous dresses of all time.

Armani also went back to black with deep noir velvet and silk for a whole series of evening gowns.

The comeback of the suit In the tradition of famous tweed two-piece suit by Coco Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld always delivers a series of classic jacket and dress combination suits. Narrow jackets were paired with calf-length, daringly open skirts, while cuffs were attached with zippers. Emphasised shoulders featured among the many suits on the catwalk. – dpa
