IPOH: Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah yesterday warned individuals and organisations not to sensationalise and question the basic rights enshrined in the Federal Constitution even after a change of government.

“The rights which include Malay Rulers, religion, national language, special position of Malays and bumiputra together with other ethnic groups under Article 153 of the Constitution will be continued to be defended and there will be no compromise,” Sultan Nazrin said in his speech at the opening of the first session of the 14th Perak State Assembly sitting yesterday.

“Do not become a hero by questioning the rights which are enshrined in the Constitution.

“Any attempts to change the agreement and social contract which had been agreed upon by everyone when drawing up the Constitution will cause disharmony and threaten political stability.

“The rakyat should not become victims,” he said.

This is the first state assembly session after Pakatan Harapan (PH) swept to power. PH took over the the state from Barisan Nasional (BN) with 29 seats with BN winning 27 while PAS took three.

Subsequently, two BN assemblymen pledged their support for PH which then secured a simple majority to rule the state.

“The process of transfer of power in a peaceful manner at the state and federal levels is a new chapter that a mature democracy is strongly rooted in the country.”
