Ex-spy agency chief Hasanah remanded
> MACC probing alleged misappropriation of funds for GE14
PUTRAJAYA: Former Malaysian External Investigation Organisation directorgeneral Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid ( pix) was remanded for five days from yesterday to assist in investigations into misappropriation of government funds meant for the 14th general election (GE14).
The remand order was issued by magistrate Shah Wira Abdul Halim against the 61-year-old.
Hasanah is being investigated under Section 23 of the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. She was brought to the magistrate’s court in handcuffs and orange lockup attire at 9.08am.
Hasanah was arrested after she had her statement recorded at the MACC headquarters at 4.15pm on Tuesday.
Initial investigations found that she was allegedly involved with seven other senior officials in misappropriating the funds for personal purposes.
On Monday, a deputy director-general, also with a “datuk” title, and six administrative and diplomatic officers at the Prime Minister’s Department, were remanded for five days to facilitate investigations into the same case.
The men, aged between 34 and 49, were remanded until Sept 1.
The actual amount of the funds that were misappropriated have yet to be ascertained.
The eight officers are suspected to have stolen a “huge amount” of money that was kept in the office of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak in the early hours of May 10.
The crime was allegedly committed several hours before a similar act, that was reported in theSun on Aug 9 involving 17 security guards at the department, who helped themselves to RM3.5 million in cash.
Both incidents took place a day after the defeat of the Barisan Nasional government in the May polls.
