Classical Feng Shui

IN MY previous article, I discussed the Peach Blossom formula, which is a feng shui technique to increase spousal luck opportunities. The formula focuses on increasing the quantity of such opportunities, but not necessarily the quality.

Fortunately, there is a feng shui technique that can improve the quality of your relationships.

Unlike the Peach Blossom method, this technique can improve all kinds of relationhips, for example between husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, parents and children, among friends, and reputedly even between your wife and your mother!

This technique comes under the Eight Mansions feng shui method, and makes use of the Yen Nian, or Nian Yen qi.

All of us are assigned a Gua number based on our Chinese Solar year of birth.

From our Gua number, we can find out our Yen Nian sector and direction. ( See Diagram 1 to find out your Yen Nian direction).

Take note that the Gua number for males and females born in the same year can be different.

There are many ways to use this technique to improve the quality of your relationships.

The most popular way is to have the main door located in the Yen Nian sector of the house.

If your career or business requires you to cultivate good interpersonal skills, for example, if you are an actor, motivational speaker, or work in multi-level marketing, then you should have the main door of your house in the Yen Nian sector.

This method is harder to explain in a short article, as the Yen Nian sector differs, based on the sitting direction of the house.

Instead, I will focus on techniques using the individual Yen Nian sectors and directions.

Let’s say your Yen Nian direction and sector is West. Demarcate your house into eight sectors using the centre of the house as reference. You can do this by simply placing a compass at the centre of the house.

Is there a room or space in the West sector of the house that you can use as a room or study? If you can, you should sleep or study in that room.

The rationale is that if you spend time there, you will absorb the positive energy of that sector and benefit from it.

If there is a common space in the West, try to spend more of your time there.

For example, if you are an avid reader, you may want to make that a reading area, and place a lazy chair there for good measure.

Or if you are a computer geek, then spend time working on your computer there!

Now let us look at the placement of your bedroom or study.

Identify the West sector within the room. It would be optimal if you can place your bed or study there.

In practice, this is not always possible, and it is okay to skip this if you have to.

Next, we want to orientate the bed and the study table to face your Yen Nian direction ( see Diagram 2).

The way to determine the facing for the bed and study table is different. For the bed, the head (or bed head) should face the West direction. For the study, it is the direction that you face when sitting.

Aside from promoting relationships, harmony and good communication, the Yen Nian qi also governs longetivity. It can help to prolong and enhance the quality of your life.
