> Fate of Penang project dependent on pending studies: Loke

- BY EDMUND LEE

GEORGE TOWN: The proposed light rail transit (LRT) system in Penang remains unconfirmed pending studies on the best mode of mass transport for the state, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke ( pix).

He said the federal government needs to consider which transport system suits the island best in terms of reducing traffic congestion.

Loke said among the other transport options being considered are trams and water taxis.

“We are still working it out as discussions are still ongoing for the best mode of public transport,” he said after witnessing the signing ceremony between Penang Port and Royal Caribbean Cruises to redevelop the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel yesterday.

Also present were Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and state exco members.

Loke, however, said the state government would have the final say on the matt er.

The state government had come out with a comprehensive RM46 billion Penang Transport Master Plan which includes highways, LRT, monorail and cable cars.

When met by reporters after the function, Chow said the matter was still under consideration as studies are being carried out by the ministry.

Meanwhile, commenting on the necessity of building a low-cost carrier terminal near Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas, Loke said there has been no final decision on the matter yet.

“The Transport Ministry has not given any approval yet,” he said, adding that the airport would definitely be expanded, but a decision has yet to be made on a suitable model.

Commenting on the appointment of board members to the Penang Port Commission, he said it would include political appointees and professionals with experience in managing ports.
