IGP says Ops Dadu a success

> Over 400 dens raided in nationwide fight against illegal gambling

KUALA LUMPUR: A hotline set up by police in July for the public to channel informatio­n on illegal gambling activities nationwide has proven to be a fruitful effort as it led to over 400 illegal gaming dens being raided.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun ( pix) said yesterday since the operations room and hotline were activated on July 20, police have received 716 tip-offs on illegal gaming activities.

Based on the informatio­n received, police had conducted 414 raids under an anti-illegal gambling operation codenamed “Ops Dadu” nationwide.

Mohamad Fuzi said that 141 of the tip-offs are being investigat­ed for further evidence while 161 have been found to be baseless for further action.

About a third of the tip-offs were received in Kedah – all of which were accurate informatio­n.

“In the effort to eradicate these activities, we urge the public to continue channellin­g informatio­n to us,” he said.

Between January and Sept 5, police had conducted 12,449 raids on various gambling dens and detained 22,300 people.

For the same period last year, 12,628 people were held in 24,338 raids.

The lower figures this year was significan­t as it was due to the continuous efforts by police in countering the scourge.

Mohamad Fuzi said the cash seizure from the raids was higher this year at RM4.67 million compared with RM3.73 million seized last year.
