Criminal intimidation probe initiated

> Police act on report lodged by businessman against Shafee, Azeez

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have initiated an investigation under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation following a report lodged by businessman Deepak Jaikishan against lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah and Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Rahim.

Sentul district police chief ACP R. Munusamy said the probe was initiated following the carpet trader’s report.

Deepak, who is a defendant in a suit filed by widow of private investigator P. Balasubramaniam A. Santhamil Selvi, claimed that Shafee was appointed to the case against his will by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.

“The complainant so far claimed that he was allegedly cautioned ... we are looking into it under criminal intimidation,” he told theSun at the Sentul district police headquarters yesterday.

theSun reported on Sunday that Deepak claimed he had refused to give false testimony in the suit as allegedly ordered by Shafee and Azeez.

The duo had, allegedly on several occasions, demanded that Deepak not show up in court on the pretext of being medically unfit.

Deepak claimed Shafee had allegedly ordered him to obtain medical leave from a government hospital and, on another occasion, Azeez had arranged for him to be warded at a private hospital under the watch of a doctor, who was a friend of the politician.

The trader claimed he was forced to adhere to the orders as he was under continuous pressure by Najib and those in league with him.

Deepak alleged that the duo had also cautioned him on the consequences of speaking truthfully in his court testimony, both in personal and business terms.

He also stated in his report that he has audio and visual recordings of the coercion by Shafee and Azeez to substantiate his claims.
