‘Criteria must be met for Interpol’s Red Notice listing’

- BY CHARLES RAMENDRAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Police said there are certain requirements that must be met prior to the public listing of wanted people in Interpol’s webpages.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said yesterday the process of an application for such a listing is time- consuming and depended on Interpol’s protocol.

It was the prerogative of Interpol to decide if a wanted individual’s identity will be displayed to the public or specifically to the relevant authorities.

Mohamad Fuzi was responding to a report by a Bahasa Malaysia daily that said although police had said last month that investigators will apply to list businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, and his father Tan Sri Low Hock Peng under Interpol’s Red Notice, such listing was not found in Interpol’s website. Jho Low is the No. 1 person-of-interest in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.

“We hope with this clarification there will be no further confusion and wrong perceptions to the action being taken on Jho Low and his father,” he said.

On Aug 24, the Putrajaya sessions court allowed an application by the police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers for a warrant of arrest to enable the repatriation of both men for the investigations and prosecution of crimes related to money-laundering.
