More to lose at lower speeds

I REFER to the column titled, “Reducing motorcycle fatalities” published Sept 22. When the writer proposes that the speed limit of motorcycles be fixed at 70 km/h I know this person is not actually a motorcycle rider.

Doesn’t the writer know how dangerous it is to ride at that speed on highways, for instance, at the back of speeding lorries and express buses especially during night time hours?

How about bigger cubic capacity bikes? Should they be imposed the same regulation of a maximum 70 km/h as well?

Is the writer saying that we can’t overtake cars or trucks and just stay behind them to be safer? If this person has some experience in riding, that person should know that the slower the bike, the more dangerous it would become.

The ability to go faster and pass bigger vehicles is what makes motorcyclists safer.

There are more factors for fatal motorcycle accidents other than speeding. The writer should talk to some experienced riders out there.

It’s not that simple to use logic as the lower the speed, the safer. Real solutions are more complex. The writer should perhaps get a motorcycle and try riding at a maximum speed of 70 km/h for a month in Kuala Lumpur and come back again for another review.
