MACC, police handling too many cases: Tun M

> Due to high volume, investigators working on priority cases first

-

LONDON: Enforcement agencies such as the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) and the police are handling too many cases and have had to set priorities, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said cases of alleged misappropriation of government funds linked to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak were a priority, adding that MACC and the police probing the cases do not report to him.

“They act through the AG (attorney-general). Once they have submitted the information to the AG, the AG acts on it,” he told Malaysian journalists here on Monday at the conclusion of his visit to the United Kingdom (UK).

Mahathir said any action will have to be in accordance with the law and the process will take time, Bernama reported.

“If we go to court based just on what we have heard, we may lose. We have to ensure all the documentation is ready for the court to make proper consideration.”

He also expressed disappointment that Najib was unlike his father, Tun Razak Hussein, whom Mahathir held in high regard.

Mahathir said he was also disappointed over the damage done to the government during Najib’s administration.

In relation to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case, Mahathir said it does not involve the UK, adding that the case has attracted the interest of several countries, including the United States and Switzerland, which have also initiated investigations.

On his meeting with UK Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill at Whitehall on Monday, Mahathir said the Malaysian government is considering implementation of the UK method of appointing senior government officers, as well its counterterrorism procedures.

On another matter, Mahathir expressed confidence that PKR president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will win the Port Dickson by-election on Oct 13.

Asked about the manner in which the seat was vacated, Mahathir said there was nothing illegal about it although some people disputed it.
