Full honours for hero firefighters
SHAH ALAM: More than 500 people attended the funeral for the six firefighters who drowned during a search operation on Wednesday.
The six were accorded full departmental honours at the Section 15 station here before their remains were sent to their respective hometowns for burial.
Family members, Fire and Rescue Department personnel, senior government officers and several leaders attended the prayers held at about 9am.
They included Selangor state executive councillor and Seri Serdang assemblyman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud, Housing and Local Government Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek, Fire and Rescue Department director-general Mohamad Hamdan Wahid and former Housing and Local Government minister Tan Sri Noh Omar.
The prayers were led by Mohd Luqman Ramli, s uperintendent of t he Religious Unit a t t he Putrajaya Fire and Rescue Service headquarters, SEE ALSO Bernama reported.
Mohamad Hamdan, in a brief address, expressed sadness over the drowning of the six.
He said their loss was deeply felt by all Fire and Rescue personnel, and commended the deceased on their dedicated work during t heir years of service.
He a d d e d that the t r a nsportation of t he remains of the firefighters will be undertaken by the respective state Fire and Rescue departments.
In PORT DICKSON, the remains of Adnan Othman, one of the six, was laid to rest at the Lukut Muslim cemetery yesterday.
The remains of another firefighter, Yahya Ali, is expected to be flown back to Sarawak today. Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Tiong Ling Hii said Yahya’s remains was scheduled to arrive at the Sibu Airport at 10.25am and would then be flown by the department’s helicopter to his village in Kampung Tian, Matu, in Mukah, for burial.
