Architecture and design
> Developing well-trained, industry-relevant grads
FIRST City University offers a Diploma in Interior Design. It runs across seven semesters and nurtures talent interested in the field of interior architecture and design.
According to the school’s representatives, there is an increase in the demand of interior designers due to the rapid development of the nation’s building industry. New talent and fresh ideas in built environment are in want.
As such, First City UC is committed in developing welltrained, industry-relevant graduates with creativity and flair to drive the future of design via its programme.
Three target areas have been identified in developing such individuals – design, ideation and strong technical ability. Design subjects will cover the fundamentals of interior design such as ergonomics, spatial planning, application of materials and colours and understanding the needs of the users. These, along with ideation skills train students to think conceptually and develop solutions to spatial problems in promoting outstanding design. Students are developed technically via the use of AUTOCad, 3D Studio Max, Google Sketchup, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and such.
After attaining all the relevant knowledge, students are required to complete a three-month internship programme at a design firm. Here they acquire practical and economical know-how through networking and hands-on learning, becoming sought-after upon graduation.
The school’s Faculty of Design & Built Environment also exhibits the works of its students at its bi-annual Diploma Showcase events. Many of its students have gone on to win numerous awards such as the MIID Reka Awards and Nippon Asia Young Designer Awards and even established their own companies.
