The World of David Walliams Book of Stuff ...

-

Author: David Walliams Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers ISBN: 9780008293253

THIS book is a look into the world of author Walliams. It is a compilation of fun facts, quizzes, and activities related to his popular children’s titles including The Boy in the Dress, Gangsta Granny, and Mr Stink.

It also includes exclusive behindthe-scene peeks from his book-toscreen adaptations, where Walliams played roles like the dinner-lady Mrs Trafe in Billionaire Boy, and Burt in Ratburger.

The pages are filled with quirky details about his even quirkier characters like Auntie Flip’s Poetry Corner ( Bad Dad), featuring some of her “very best poems” like Ode to a Road, and Poem About a Poem.

One from Gangsta Granny, cheekily called ‘Ben’s guide to pretending to do what you’re told’, details five situations that one might want to avoid, through playful steps tinged heavily with sarcasm.

If you’re wondering how to fake-tidy your room, the first step listed by Walliams (or Ben) is to “do a threeyear degree in fine art and pass with flying colours”.

Raj, a character that appears in many of Walliams’ stories, even gets a special comic feature called Super Raj.

Suffice to say, every sliver of content is injected with a maximum dose of humour that its target audience of children aged seven and above would appreciate.

Besides characters from his books, Walliams shares tips like ‘how to draw like Tommy Ross’, the real-life “artistic genius” who now illustrates his books.

In fact, Ross also illustrated this vibrant book, alongside fellow Brit Quentin Blake, the illustrator for Walliams’ first two titles, The Boy in the Dress and Mr Stink.

Super-fans of Walliams’ writing would definitely be happily preoccupied exploring each titbit in The World of David Walliams.

While the stories might appeal to those who are not familiar, too, there are a couple of topics like The World of David Walliams Map quiz, that certainly requires a reading of the author’s other books.

But since many of the activities can be enjoyed with a buddy or two, navigating the book could be twice the fun, and perfect for some family bonding time away from digital screens. – Marion Fernando
