Splendid Holiday, a Korean TV drama that was shot in New York.

Kim started to do more work in South Korea, and her biggest breakthrough came when she landed the lead role in spy drama Shiri (1999), the highest-earning South Korean film that year. She did more films in South Korea before Hollywood beckoned.

Now after a 19-year hiatus, Kim is back doing a Korean drama series, Miss Ma, Goddess of Revenge.

The plot revolves around a woman who breaks out from prison to try and solve a series of cases that will unravel the mystery behind her daughter’s death.

Miss Ma, Goddess of Revenge airs every Saturday at 8.40pm on ONE HD (Astro channel 393).

In an email interview, Kim talks about her return to Korean television and her role in this series. Why did you take on Miss Ma, Goddess of Revenge as your comeback to Korean TV? “I have been working on films for a while but I’ve been keeping an eye out for good TV scripts.

“When I read the script for Miss Ma, it was so good that I wanted to make it my comeback project.”

What is it about the character that convinced you that you had to take on this role? “In Miss Ma, I am playing two separate roles – one as a framed mother, and another as a writer

Miss Ma is a mystery writer. Are you a fan of mystery books, films, or TV series? If so, can you name your favourites? “My favourite mystery novel would be Empire of the Ants by Bernard Weber.

“For TV series, I enjoyed watching Big Little Lies and Breaking Bad.”

As she is solving the mystery of who killed her daughter, Miss Ma also solves other cases. Are these other cases something she stumbles into while solving her own case and if so, are they all connected to each other somehow? “The structure of the drama is the sum of all the episodes. It’s very connected and special, but you’ll have to continue watching all the episodes to understand the show.”

Were you told how the series would end when you signed on, or were you kept in the dark like everyone else? “Actually, I do not know how the show is going to end.”

What do you think makes for a good whodunit or mystery? “A good whodunit would be a story with clear goals and good characters.”
