Reinforcing English learning

> British Council provides a valuable learning experience

-

MANY students have a hard time practising what they have learnt, once they finish class and return to their routine lives. Luckily, there are several ways to keep the language learning process going after class hours.

Social English

Many find it helpful to practise with others. Set up a weekly or even daily socialising activity with friends. Set ground rules that no one is allowed to speak anything but English during the whole gathering. This is also a great opportunity to practise pronunciation.

Using media

Make it a habit to watch something in English every day. If you find it difficult to follow; turn on the subtitles. After a few days, try watching without subtitles and test yourself to see how you do.

Read, read, read

Read at least 30 minutes a day. Don’t be shy to read out loud so you can practise your pronunciation at the same time. Try to look up the words you don’t understand.

Go online

There are many English podcasts that you can listen to such as the British Council Learn English Podcast, Culips ESL Podcast, and Podcasts in English. Change your social media and device settings to English. It will really help you become familiar with daily language and responding to others.

Live practice

Go out and speak the language as much as possible in different situations. Once you start doing it, the process of learning becomes easier. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, it’s all part of the process.

British Council teaches students how to learn English and be able to continue after class, making it a more valuable experience. For details on full-time and part-time English courses, visit www. britishcouncil.my/adults or call 03-2780 3864.
