Sweet sound to the ear

> Resorts World Genting’s Arena of Stars now boasts the best sound system that money can buy

IN EARLY October, fans at the Il Divo Timeless Tour Live in Genting concert at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting, were the first to experience one of the best sound systems that money can buy designed by L-Acoustics.

L-Acoustics has a reputation for making some of the best speaker systems for concerts and events worldwide.

The French company’s client list includes some of the biggest stars, and most prestigious and renowned venues in the world.

Recently, Resorts World Genting invited members of the media and business partners to the Arena of Stars to experience the new L-Acoustics sound system first hand.

The K2 system installed at the Arena of Stars includes four suspended K2 array clusters. This is made up of two 12-box arrays that are aimed towards the centre of the arena and two 10-box arrays that are aimed at the sides.

These speakers are further enhanced with four stacks of L-Acoustics K1-SB subwoofers coupled with eight KARA enclosures.

Altogether, the whole system is driven by four LA4X and 20 LA12X amplified controllers (amplifiers).

To non-audiophiles, this means that the Arena of Stars now has the best sound system with the best speakers money can buy.

According to Faz Salleh, Pro Audio Solutions senior consultant at Sennheiser Electronics Asia (the representative for the L-Acoustics brand of sound systems in Singapore and Malaysia), installing the system was a big challenge.

It began with engineers visiting the venue and taking precise measurements of every element within the Arena of Stars.

This data is then translated into a 3D computer model which is then used, with the help of a proprietary software, to formulate the perfect audio solution for the venue.

“We are not in the business of selling speakers,” said Faz. “We are in the business of providing the best audio solutions.

“If our clients say that they want more speakers, we would have to decline them if that were to deteriorate the audio experience.”

Resorts World Genting Promotions & Entertainment vice president Kevin Tann added that the new sound system would not only give visitors a wholly unique audio experience, but at the same time, open the Arena of Stars to a new and broader selection of performers who insist on only the best equipment for their shows.

Also present at the event was Sennheiser Electronics Asia Pro Audio Solutions Sales vice president Vince Tan.

Guests were later entertained with a short performance by John Thomas & Friends to demonstrate the strength of the new sound system.

Despite the undeniable clarity of the sound coming from the speakers, it was let down somewhat by the acoustics in the Arena of Stars.

Because of the small audience present, the sound engineers had to lower the sound level to its very minimum, but it still produced chest-thumping bass, sharp highs, and a messy soundstage. This is because a larger crowd is needed to dampen the sound.

An upgrade in the arena’s acoustics will go a long way to making the audio experience even better.

That said, this is a significant achievement for Resorts World Genting and everyone responsible for making the Arena of Stars a concert venue with one of the best sound systems in Malaysia now.
