KUALA LUMPUR: Police shot dead five robbers and captured another in a shootout during a goldsmith store heist at a shopping centre in Kuchai Lama yesterday.

It is learnt that a gang of six robbers armed with handguns and machetes had arrived at the NSK shopping centre at about 4.30pm before they held up staff of a goldsmith store at the place.

A police team from the Selangor serious crimes division that was on a special operation at the area was dispatched to the scene following a distress call.

When the team of detectives arrived at the scene, a shoot-out ensued between them and the robbers.

Several of the robbers tried to escape and the shoot-out continued at the shopping centre’s carpark.

Panicked shoppers ran helter-skelter upon hearing the sound of gunshots and scurried to safety.

Selangor police CID chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat said yesterday that four robbers were killed during the shoot-out and a police detective suffered a gunshot injury to his leg.

He said another two suspects managed to flee the scene in a car and were pursued by the detectives.

Fadzil said about a few kilometres from the shopping centre, another shoot-out took place where a suspect was killed and the other was arrested.

He said police also recovered two pistols, several machetes and a large part of the stolen jewellery from the dead suspects.

Fadzil said the injured policeman was sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre where he was warded and reported to be in stable condition.
