Malaysia win petanque, pencak silat gold
MALAYSIA bagged two gold medals at the 2019 Sea Games in The Philippines yesterday in the petanque men’s triples and the pencak silat competition.
The trio of Muhammad Hafizuddin Mat Daud, Syed Akmal Fikri Syed Ali and Saiful Bahri Musmin battled for almost three hours before beating Thailand’s Wanchaloem Srimueang, Piyabut Chamchoi and Panu Roeksanit 1311 at the CDC Lot in front of the Royce Hotel and Casino in New Clark City.
The Malaysians trailed 4-9 before drawing level at 11-11. Muhammad Hafizuddin then emerged as the hero by scoring two points to give Malaysia the first gold in petanque.
The win made up for the disappointment of the national women’s trio, who earlier lost 3-14 to Cambodia in the women’s triples final.
Meanwhile in Subic, Zulfakar Zulfazly bagged gold in the pencak silat competition.
The 22-year-old beat Indonesia’s Kusumah Hanifan 3-2 in the men’s tanding Class D (6065kg) final. It is the second gold for Malaysia in pencak silat and the team thus achieved the target set for them.
The Malaysian contingent to the Manila SEA Games has amassed 23 gold medals at press time. – Bernama
