IN LINE with the theme ‘A Blooming New Beginning,’ Avenue K’s ground floor atrium was transformed into a floral paradise with cherry blossoms and peonies, which symbolise both renewal and the start of spring. The mall’s colourful facade of flowers, lanterns and Oriental ornaments is part of its Chinese New Year campaign, which ends on Feb 9.

During the festive period, the mall will also host a one-stop bazaar selling a wide array of homemade confectionery, cookies, oriental fashion apparel, festive hampers and decorations.

During the launch of the campaign, Avenue K’s general manager Phang Sze Sze spoke about the significance of the Money Showering ceremony to be held at the mall on Feb 3.

Phang said: “The celebration will kick off with the lighting of firecrackers, followed by a special ceremony known as ‘Rolling in the Wealth,’ whereby Mandarin oranges will be rolled through the main entrance, to welcome wealth.

“Six lions dance performers will perform an acrobatic dance for a grand blessing to usher in good fortune, happiness and longevity.”

The event will culminate in RM1,000 cash being ‘showered’ upon shoppers at the atrium.

Speaking about senior citizens and family ties at the launch, Phang said: “It is time to remember the elderly and appreciate our parents and grandparents. People should feel blessed to have a family to care for, as not many have the privilege of having loved ones to celebrate with.”

In line with this sentiment, Avenue K treated 20 senior citizens from Rumah Kasih Charity Home to dinner at The Chicken Rice Shop, and presented them each with a RM100 shopping voucher from Village Grocer and ang pows

Rumah Kasih’s manager Foong Peng Lam said the home offers shelter, food and medical care to the poor and the terminally ill who have been abandoned in government hospitals by their families who were unwilling to take care of them.

Guests at the launch were also entertained with a traditional Chinese musical instrument performance and a ‘live’ watercolour painting of flowers.

Avenue K has lined up several activities to usher in the Lunar New Year and to entertain shoppers, such as a Street Art Lion Dance, Chinese Blossom Cultural Dance remix, Erhu Speed Painting performance, Diabolo performance, Rainbow Calligraphy Art and a fusion instrumental musical performance.
