Making French fashion greener
FRENCH consumers are taking part in a national consultation to make fashion more responsible and sustainable via Make.org. This initiative launched by French collective “Paris Good Fashion” aims to accelerate the environmental changes that the industry is facing.
While the final results from this national survey will be announced on Oct 25, here are the nine most acclaimed proposals so far.
1. Material choice and quality: Certification is needed for the sustainability and recyclability of clothes, and also to trace harmful residue.
2. Products’ cycle of life
A real network of recycling and upcycling for used garments has to be implemented and supported by the brands.
3. Plastics and packaging
The industry needs to reduce plastic packaging, notably for parcel shipping.
4. Local production
It’s necessary to create a French industrial network that reuses discarded clothes.
5. Transparency and traceability Clients should have access to transparent information concerning the origins and manufacturing of the items.
6. Fast fashion
Unveiling new collections every fortnight should be stopped.
7. Work conditions
Companies should be made accountable in case of illegal subcontracting.
8. Sales
We should end fake sales initiatives all year long and forbid items that are made solely to be sold at “50% off.”
9. Sizes
Clothes should be more sustainable and adaptive (adjustable size, customised elements to adapt to trends, etc.)
This grassroots survey was organised by Paris Good Fashion, a collective of brands and media including Galeries Lafayette, Etam Group, Paris Modes Insider, Vestiaire Collective, Eram Group, Petit Bateau, La Redoute, and Who’s Next.
The survey is currently ongoing and can still be accessed via Make.org. – AFP-Relaxnews
