More evacuated as heavy rain continues

PETALING JAYA: Floods have worsened in at least four states in Peninsular Malaysia as heavy rain continued on Tuesday and yesterday.

Terengganu was the worst hit, as 690 people from 184 families were evacuated and sent to relief centres. This was an increase from 389 people from 94 families on Tuesday.

The state now has 23 temporary relief centres. In Dungun, the most badly affected district, 131 people from 34 families are now at seven relief centres.

In Setiu district, two more relief centres were opened. The district now has 125 people from 40 families at relief centres.

In Kuala Nerus district, the number of evacuees rose from 156 people from 32 families to 206 people from 52 families. Similar increases were also seen in the districts of Kuala Terengganu and Marang.

In Malacca, the number of flood victims at three evacuation centres remained at 199 people from 48 families as of 8am yesterday.

In the Jasin district, 121 people from 29 families are now housed at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tehel, and another 62 people from 16 families are taking shelter in SK Parit Gantong.

In Alor Gajah, the evacuation centre at SK Durian Tunggal is housing 13 victims from three families.

In Kelantan, 14 people from three families were evacuated. This was an increase from only six people from two families the day before. They are all from the Kuala Krai district.

In Kedah, 85 people from three districts were evacuated to relief centres on Monday.

All 85, from 23 families are from the districts of Kubang Pasu, Pokok Sena and Kota Setar.
