Southern Comfort – a Cospicua Parish Church and Spiro Mizzi Foundation project

-

At the end of the 2016 scholastic year, Southern Comfort organised a soiree at Sagra Familja Hall, Cospicua in honour of Maurice Mizzi, the chairman of the Foundation’s Board. This was held to mark the end of another year of teaching and helping children with homework.

The theme chosen this year was ‘Aesop’s Fables’. Given that literacy is the foundation’s main concern and that research shows that lack of reading is mostly felt in the Cottonera area, it was thought that this year’s concert would be related to a collection of fables credited to Aesop.

Under the supervision of Emanuel Cassar, Ingrid Fiorentino, Danett Muscat and helped by Martha Galea, a set of fables in English were read by the children as well as projected on the walls. Another fable ‘The Ant and the Grasshopper’ was chosen and adapted to be acted out by the children attending Southern Comfort. Along the programme there were also a set of dance routines performed by children under the guidance of Kimberly Calleja, Gabriella Stagno Piscopo and Shaznay Graham.

Next item saw Mr Mizzi presenting a cheque for €3,000 to the deputy parish priest in order to sustain the expenses and activities held at Southern Comfort 2015/2016.

Both Mr Mizzi and the parish priest encouraged the children to attend Southern Comfort. They also appealed to the parents to encourage their children to participate in such activities. They ended their speeches by encouraging everyone to engage themselves in reading because the more knowledgeable we are, the more confident we would be to face every challenge faced throughout our lives.
