A match which always produces an exciting encounter did not live up to expectations on this occasion.

After initially sizing each other up - both defences being very cautious - on the first penetrative attack Qormi took the lead in the 16th minute through Ayrton Falzon.

Young Stars, dependent on their usual counter attack methods, broke down the right flank on 25 minutes, floating a high cross which Luke Borg Costanzi met high above his head, at the far post, hooking the ball into the net first time.

A wonderful effort which even at this early stage of the season can hardly be bettered. Qormi did not convert a penalty corner in the 26th minute but Juan Sarcia shot his team ahead from another penalty corner effort right on half time to give them a 2-1 lead.

Young Stars dominated midfield during the first part of the second half but they did not convert three penalty corners.

As the game wore on, gaps opened up with teams trying to avoid midfield by using high crosses into the opponents D.

At this point Qormi continued to exert pressure on the Young Stars rear guard especially through runs down their right flank.

It was James Mizzi, the Young Stars custodian, who used his experience to smother quite a few attempts as he dominated his D.

Qormi then played down the clock by using possession to exert control and the game petered out giving them victory by 2-1 in the first contest of the season.
