Naxxar back on track against 10-man Melita

Naxxar Lions returned to winning ways easily defeating 10man Melita with second half goals.

Naxxar were the better team with Yuri Messias in splendid form but the sending off of Aiden Mizzi in the first half, surely tilted the balance in favour of Vince Carbonaro’s side.

Naxxar missed a sitter on 13 minutes when Jurgen Debono passed towards the completely unmarked Messias who shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Melita’s first attack came some minutes later with Alan Borg Olivier shooting slightly over the bar. Half way through the first half Duan Bonnici’s first timer went slightly over the bar.

On 34 minutes Melita were reduced to ten players when Aiden Mizzi was sent off for stopping Messias who was heading for goal.

Four minutes into the second half Naxxar forged ahead when Messias passed towards Bonnici whose low cross was met by Jurgen Debono who slotted home from close range. Sixty seconds later a John Debono effort went slightly over the bar.

On 57 minutes Naxxar doubled the score when a Messias shot was partially saved by Grima with the ball finishing against the upright and from the rebound Duane Bonnici headed home.

On 65 minutes Melita went close with a fine move - Groves passed to Alan Borg Olivier whose grounder went slightly off target.
