Stephen Vella wins trap event

Stephen Vella claimed first place of the Trap event in aid of the Marigold Foundation that was held at the Qormi Clay Shooting Club this weekend.

This event was organised on 50 qualificat­ion targets, with the top six shooters overall, advancing to the semi-final stage and eventually the Medal matches.

This Sunday’s semi-finalists were Stephen Vella who qualified with the score of 48/50, Frank Scorfna with 46/50 hits, George Mifsud scored 42/50, Joe Xuereb managed 41/50 hits and Chris Vella together with Clayton Carabott both hit 40/50 targets.

This was Stephen Vella’s first achievemen­t of the season when he beat Frank Scorfna in the Gold Medal match with a perfect straight of 15/15 hits to 11/15 hit targets.

At the end of the semi-final, three shooters tied scores with 13/15 hits.

Stephen Vella and Frank Scorfna passed through the threeway shoot-off to qualify for the Gold Medal match with the score of 13/15+4, leaving George Mifsud in the Bronze Medal match with 13/15+3 hits.

There, Mifsud faced Joe Xuereb who had qualified for bronze with 11/15 hits.

Mifsud beat Xuereb 9/15 to 8/15 hits to collect the Bronze medal.

Chris Vella finished in fifth place overall when he hit 9/15 clays and Clayton Carabott closed the match in sixth place with 6/15 hits.

The top three shooters in their respective classes concluded their two qualificat­ion rounds with:

Class A

1st Stephen Vella 48/50 2nd George Mifsud 42/50 3rd Nicky Carabott 39/50

Class B

1st Frank Scorfna 46/50 2nd Joe Xuereb 41/50 3rd Clayton Carabott 40/50

Class C

1st Chris Vella 40/50 2nd Raymond Micallef 36/50 3rd Romeo Cassar 35/50

The MSSF Shotgun Trap programme will continue on Sunday at the Bidnija ranges with the Gaba Diamonds Trophy.
