Taking the mickey out of PN supporters

-

Any political leader who bases an argument on hearsay or rumours when addressing his party supporters, particularly on special occasions, would be insulting the intelligence of his own supporters. This is precisely what Dr Simon Busuttil did when he addressed PN supporters, gathered in Floriana during the Independence Day mass-meeting.

Simon Busuttil said that he had heard rumours that the general election could very well be held this coming November! I am more than sure that Dr Busuttil knew he was taking the mickey out of his own blinkered supporters, when he knows that the budget had already been announced for October (in fact Budget Day was 17 October). And then there would be the Leader of the Opposition’s reply to the budget speech followed by the Prime Minister’s reply to Dr Busuttil’s speech. So the earliest date would then have to be in December when people would all be looking forward to Christmas and New Year’s Day festivities and not an election!

As if that was not enough, Simon Busuttil told his party’s faithful supporters that the PN “will be winning the election”! Of course, Simon did not base his claim on “rumours” this time but on wishful thinking! The last time he had made a similar prediction was on 7 March 2013 at a mass-meeting in Naxxar, when he and Lawrence Gonzi assured PN supporters: “On 9 March we vote, on 10 March we celebrate.” That was just two days prior to the election. Imagine this time, saying the same thing around 18 months before Election Day!

When will Simon Busuttil start treating the intelligence of his own supporters with more respect?
