Second half goals put Senglea back on top

- Sirens: Senglea A: Referee:

Sirens Senglea A 0 3

Three second half goals gave Senglea a deserved victory over Sirens, a victory that put the Cottonera side back on top of the standings.

Senglea were by far the better team against a below par Sirens side. However Senglea found the going hard and only had the better of their opponents when they scored the opening two goals in the space of five minutes at the start of the second period.

Senglea were the better team in the first half and enjoyed the lions’ share of the exchanges: however their scoring opportunities were a handful by the end of the first half.

After a couple of minutes Sirens goalkeeper Cini blocked Cabral following a melee in front of goal and on seven minutes a good Senglea move was finished by Christian Cassar who blasted well over the bar.

On 17 minutes Jamie Pace tried his luck from a distance with his central drive well saved by Cini. Sixty seconds later Sirens had their best chance of the first half when Christian Caruana did all the running on the right flank and crossed towards Ekani Rodriguez who however failed to connect in front of goal to miss a glorious opportunity.

On the half hour a good Cabral shot on the turn was well saved by Cini and five minutes later the Sirens goalkeeper was saved by the base of the upright when a Da Sousa Dias freekick completely deceived him.

Just before the break Jamie Pace’s grounder missed the base of the upright by a whisker.

Eight minutes into the second half Da Sousa Dias had a lob from an acute angle going over the bar. Two minutes later player coach Pablo Doffo broke the deadlock with a fierce central drive from a distance that completely deceived Cini.

On the hour Senglea doubled the score when a Jamie Pace freekick was deflected by the Sirens defensive wall with the ball finishing at the back of the net.

On 72 minutes Sirens should have pulled one back but substitute Charles Newuche failed to score with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Four minutes later Senglea put the game to bed with a third goal scored by Juninho Cabral from close range following a Dalli-Sammut action.
