Kalou hat-trick sees Hertha triumph over Gladbach

-

Hertha Berlin saw off Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Matchday 10 opener thanks to a hattrick from Salomon Kalou at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

It was a game that started with both sides looking to win the ball and break forward quickly, but the tide soon turned in favour of the home side when Mitchell Weiser’s cross was met by the head of a diving Salomon Kalou.

It got worse for Gladbach after half an hour as Patrick Herrmann was forced off after turning his ankle.

As USMNT player Fabian Johnson was preparing to come on, Hertha struck once more through Kalou, who reacted fastest to Nico Elvedi’s botched clearance.

To rub further salt in the wound of a first half to forget for Mönchengladbach, Christoph Kramer was then sent off for two bookable offences before the break.

Despite being a man down, Borussia improved in the second half, but it was the hosts who had the first chance after the restart

The visitors showed good intent going forward as they looked to get back into this game with Johnson twice failing to get the better of Rune Jarstein.

The Dane did well to preserve Hertha’s two-goal lead by denying both Vestergaard and Lars Stindl before the game was put beyond doubt when Kalou slotted home his third of the evening five minutes from the end to condemn Gladbach to their fourth away defeat of the season.
