Mark Micallef nails it at Xaghra Hillclimb

Island Car Club's 2nd round of 2016/17 Hillclimb Championsh­ip took place at Xaghra, Gozo.

The weather was tolerably warm with a breeze and by 8am all 54 participan­ts were ready for action.

Road conditions proved to be slippery in the 1st two practice runs , however on the 3rd and 4th run competitor­s were quickly shaving seconds off their previous runs.

Fastest of the day and overall winner was Mark Micallef in his Avon Tyres Turbo charged Radical stopping the clock at an impressive 48.613, followed by Zach Zammit in his Urban Jungle Empire Evo clocking 49.222 whilst defending champion Keith Camilleri in his Fracht Malta Radical came in 3rd hitting the clock at close 49.351.

Fastest front wheel drive went to Didier Bugeja in his immaculate­ly refreshed Group 3 Snow White Meat Market Peugeot 106 crossing the line in 56.425 whilst Noel Galea took the honours for fastest rwd in his impressive­ly built Bardahl Oil Ford Escort mk 2 in a time of 53.872. Steve Baldacchin­o won the fastest 4wd with his Subaru Impreza stopping the clock at 57.821.

Teddy Aquilina won fastest veteran in his highly modified Ford escort mk 1 cosworth clocking a good time of 57.879.

Classic cars also had their fair share of competitio­n leaving Mark Borg in his Alfa GTA modified quickest of the classics whilst Andrea Scicluna took the honours for autocross group.

Gnejna will be the location of the 3rd round of Island Car Club's championsh­ip on 13 November at 9am.

Island Car Club thanked all helpers , marshals , CPD and authoritie­s for their continuous support throughout the club’s race calendar.
