Eritrean who tried to steal an officer’s gun given 19 months jail

An Eritrean man was sentenced to 19 months imprisonme­nt after he was found guilty of attempting to steal a police constable’s weapon, causing him and a warden slight injury, damaging a mobile phone and disobeying the orders of the relevant authority.

The incident happened on Wednesday.

Abrham Tekelu Solomon, 27, pleaded guilty to all charges. He was charged with attempting to steal a police constable’s gun, damaging his mobile, disobeying an officer, causing slight injury to an officer and a warden, breaching public order and threatenin­g authoritie­s.

Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo, presiding over the case, took note of the accused’s clean criminal record. The court heard how the accused had been exhibiting heavy stress due to a lack of work or place of residence at the time of the incident.

Taking all due considerat­ions, he was sentenced to 19 months imprisonme­nt.
