Eritrean who tried to steal an of­fi­cer’s gun given 19 months jail

An Eritrean man was sen­tenced to 19 months im­pris­on­ment af­ter he was found guilty of at­tempt­ing to steal a po­lice con­sta­ble’s weapon, caus­ing him and a war­den slight in­jury, dam­ag­ing a mo­bile phone and dis­obey­ing the or­ders of the rel­e­vant au­thor­ity.

The in­ci­dent happened on Wed­nes­day.

Abrham Tekelu Solomon, 27, pleaded guilty to all charges. He was charged with at­tempt­ing to steal a po­lice con­sta­ble’s gun, dam­ag­ing his mo­bile, dis­obey­ing an of­fi­cer, caus­ing slight in­jury to an of­fi­cer and a war­den, breach­ing pub­lic or­der and threat­en­ing au­thor­i­ties.

Mag­is­trate Caroline Far­ru­gia Frendo, pre­sid­ing over the case, took note of the ac­cused’s clean crim­i­nal record. The court heard how the ac­cused had been ex­hibit­ing heavy stress due to a lack of work or place of res­i­dence at the time of the in­ci­dent.

Tak­ing all due con­sid­er­a­tions, he was sen­tenced to 19 months im­pris­on­ment.
