Arsene Wenger says Giroud scorpion goal one of his top five

-

Olivier Giroud’s ‘scorpion’ goal in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace is one of “the top five” strikes since Arsene Wenger took over the helm at Arsenal 21 years ago.

Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp goals are among Wenger’s favourites but he said “this will be the Giroud goal”.

Speaking after Sunday’2 2-0 win against Crystal Palace, Wenger said: “Technically it’s

Ten-man Manchester City bounced back from a bruising defeat to title rival Liverpool by beating Burnley 2-1 yesterday, easing the pressure on manager Pep Guardiola.

City captain Fernandinho was shown a straight red card in the 32nd minute for a two-footed lunge on Johann Gudmundsson at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite the setback, City’s French defender Gael Clichy broke the deadlock with a well-placed shot into the far corner in the 58th minute.

Sergio Aguero then came off the bench to score City’s second, firing in off the post from the tightest of angles four minutes later.

Burnley made a fight of it when an attempted clearance by City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo was eventually smashed over the line by Ben Mee in the 70th, but City held on for an important win after Saturday’s 10 defeat at Anfield.

City moved up to third place, two points behind Liverpool and seven behind leaders Chelsea, which not impossible but you must have that reflex. The cross didn’t come ideally and Olivier did something special.”

French forward Giroud said his strike owed much to “maximum luck”.

It was a swift counter-attack ended with Giroud flicking an Alexis Sanchez cross from behind him over his shoulder and into the goal, via the crossbar, with his left heel. plays Tottenham tomorrow.

Manchester United were made to fight hard to extend theirLeague winning streak to six matches as they beat 10-man West Ham 2-0 in London.

United dominated for most of the match, especially after West Ham had Feghouli sent off after 15 minutes. They were also unlucky not to take the lead before the Hammers missed two great chances to open the scoring through Lanzini and Antonio.

Mata shot United ahead in the 63rd minute after receiving a good pass from Rashford.

Ibrahimovic scored the second from what seemed to be a clear offside position in the 78th minute.

The victory enabled United to join Tottenham on 39 points, but the latter have tomorrow’s match against leaders Chelsea in hand.

West Bromwich Albion deepened Hull’s relegation concerns with a 3-1 victory at the Hawthorns.

Robert Snodgrass had given Hull a first-half lead, but Chris Brunt and Gareth McAuley seized on errors

The goal paved the way for Arsenal’s win which enabled them to move into the top three.

Giroud said: “It’s not difficult to say that’s the best one. I needed God’s help to score that goal. It was a bit lucky but it was the only thing I could do.

“The ball was behind me and I tried to hit it with the backheel. I tried to deflect it. In that position you can’t do anything else.”

Team-mate Bellerin said: I couldn’t believe it. It’s a great goal. I’ve seen him do stuff like that in training and we know what he’s capable of.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey: There seem to be a lot of wonder goals recently. I haven’t seen it again but it was a fantastic strike for him.

Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce: “It was an outstanding, brilliant finish.”
