- Domenic Aquilina

Balzan FC are celebrating the 80th anniversary since the birth of the club. It was way back in 1937 that Balzan Youths FC made their baptism in local football. 80 years on and Balzan are now regarded as one of the top elite Premier Division clubs in Malta.

At a press conference at the Balzan FC Training Complex in Lija, yesterday, Club President Anton Tagliaferro spoke about all this and more.

He said: “It was in 1937 that a small village town football club by the name of Balzan Youths FC started competing in Maltese football. Eighty years after we are here speaking about this team which made history and about the actual Balzan FC.

“After all the negative news that we have been hearing recently about Maltese football in general, today we are here to speak about something nice especially about Balzan FC.

“This year our club is commemorating and celebrating 80 years of football. All I can say is that we are always working hard to be as professional as can be both within the senior team and within our Academy.

“Today we are placed amongst the elite of Maltese football and this makes me happy. I am a very successful minded person so we all at the club work in the most professional of manners to get the club to better ways all the time and I think we have done so in due course.

“It would be the perfect timing if this year the club could land a major honour which of course is our main objective”

During the same press conference, Balzan were presented with the team’s new football kit which coincides with the club’s 80th anniversary commemoration and which is an exact replica to the Balzan Youths FC kit way back in 1937.

Renowned Spanish sports equipment manufacturers Joma’s company representative Paola Tagliatela stated that the brand are very proud to be associated with Balzan FC and that the new 80th anniversary kit will get the club to win their first major honour with this kit.

Balzan FC head coach Oliver Spiteri confirmed that the club will be busily engaged monitoring possible new signings during this January transfer window.

He said: “I can confirm our new signing – Serbian Milos Lepovic is now a Balzan FC player. Still the January transfer window is a long way off so we will remain monitoring possible new additions to the squad.”
