Qrendi, Swieqi share spoils in top match

The game of the week was the 4-4 draw between Qrendi and Swieqi United at the Sirens Stadium.

Qrendi raced into a 3-0 lead through Giovanni Galea, Dasser Sammut and Dhonathan Santos da Hora but Swieqi fought back with goals from Sean Gatt Baldacchin­o and Roderick Taliana to make it 3-2 on half time.

Qrendi went 4-2 up through Dylan Zarb, but Swieqi came back to equalise through Gatt Baldacchin­o and Kyle Muscat.

Zabbar St Patrick confirmed their second place in the table with a 5-1 thrashing of Gudja United at the Sirens Stadium.

Jean Claude Cesare, Gabriel Bonavia, Karl Sacco, Kurt Cutajar and Karl Borg scored for Zabbarwhil­e Gudja scored a consolatio­n goal through Steve Buttigieg.

Mgarr United returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Marsaxlokk. Lazar Doric put Mgarr ahead after 8 minutes with the same player doubling on 23 minutes. Matheus de Albaquerqu­e reduced the deficit on 59 minutes but Mgarr held on for an important three points.

Ghaxaq registered their first win in the new year with a 2-1 victory over St George’s in the second match at the Charles Abela Stadium.

Jose Luis Carlos Lopes put Ghaxaq ahead after 9 minutes from the penalty spot with St George’s equalizing through Jordi Delia on 72 minutes. Ghaxaq won the game with a goal a minute from time scored by PhiramSakc­hai.

In the first of the Monday night matches at the Centenary Stadium, Zejtun Corinthian­s beat Mellieha by two goals to one. Adrian Carabott opened the scoring on 23 minutes with Mauro Brincat doubling on 52 minutes through a Mauro Brincat penalty. Nicky Zammit reduced the deficit on 56 minutes for Mellieha. San Gwann lost further ground in the second encounter when they drew 1-1 with Attard FC. Andre’ Cachia gave San Gwann the lead on 76 minutes but Nigel Spiteri equalised in added time.

In the Friday night match, Birzebbuga St Peters and Siggiewi shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Sirens Stadium. Sam Vella scored for Siggiewi while the Saints replied through Ronnie Celeste.
