The Wonder Women of the Baroque Age

-

Din l-Art Ħelwa in collaboration with the International Institute for Baroque Studies, University of Malta presents “THE ‘WONDER WOMEN’ OF THE BAROQUE AGE”, a public talk by Sandra Mifsud Bonnici who is a Senior Lecturer in Systems of Knowledge at the Junior College, University of Malta and Visiting Lecturer at the Dept. of Pharmacy, at the same University.

She obtained a B.Pharm (Hons) in 1986 and BA Sociolegal Studies in 1990. Recently she read for the Master of Arts in Baroque Studies offered by the International Institute of Baroque Studies at the University of Malta, graduating in November 2015 with her dissertation ‘Women in Eighteenth Century Malta, Legal and Social Aspects’.

Her wide-ranging qualifications and background have given her an inter-disciplinary outlook reflected in her writing and lecturing.

During her talk, Ms Mifsud Bonnici will dwell on how the majority of women in eighteenth century Malta were under the control of husbands, brothers, fathers or even sons and are usually described in stereotypes: Married women, nuns, witches and prostitutes. Yet, a substantial number of ‘wonder women’ managed to overcome the restrictions imposed on them by law and society.

Sandra Mifsud Bonnici will share this fascinating subject on Thursday 2 February at 6.30pm at 133, Melita Street, Valletta. Entrance is free but donations to Din l-Art Helwa are appreciated.
