PM indicates police not investigating Konrad Mizzi; says he does not have FIAU report in hand
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat yesterday indicated that the police are not investigating Minister Konrad Mizzi over the information uncovered through the Panama Papers.
Replying to questions by the media, Dr Muscat said the police have already said that there was no reasonable suspicion for such an investigation.
Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela recently said that all cases raised by the Opposition were being investigated, and the Opposition held this to also mean the Panama Papers cases involving Minister Konrad Mizzi and OPM Chief of Staff Keith Schembri.
The Prime Minister said however, that “from the public information I have, the police already said there is no reasonable suspicion for these persons to be investigated.”
Asked by The Malta Independent whether he has seen the FIAU report on Minister Konrad Mizzi, the Prime Minister said that the FIAU is an independent authority and does not give reports to politicians. “God forbid the day comes when I see FIAU reports.”
Both Minister Konrad Mizzi and OPM Chief of Staff Keith Schembri were found to have companies in the secret jurisdiction of Panama.
EU Parliamentary MEPs have been calling for the publication of the FIAU report, however this request has yet to be met.
The prime minister walked out after taking just those two questions.
