Late penalty gives Rabat precious point

-

Pieta H Rabat A 1 1

A late penalty saved Rabat Ajax from their third successive defeat, as they managed to earn a point against Pieta in a keenly contested match.

Pieta were surely the better team on the field of play, but Rabat’s never say die attitude earned them a precious point in their quest to avoid the drop to second division football next season.

Pieta had more possession in the first half and a Jalo effort sailed over the bar with Rabat hitting back with a Joseph Caruana dipper that was saved by Montfort.

On 33 minutes Pieta were unlucky when a Christian Grech freekick was stopped by the crossbar.

Two minutes later, the Pieta custodian made a double save off shots from Ryan Micallef and Chris Vella. Five minutes from the break Pieta took the lead when Jurgen Suda passed towards Clive Gauci who drilled the ball home.

Three minutes into the second half, Suda was denied by a great Sean Mintoff save and on the other end Montfort saved his side off a Ryan Micallef effort.

Following another save by the Rabat custodian from a James Scicluna shot, Rabat drew level on 72 minutes when Clive Gauci handled the ball inside the area and Joseph Caruana made no mistake from the penalty spot.
