Qormi beat Mqabba in top clash

-

Qormi 2 Mqabba 0

Qormi defeated Mqabba in a direct clash between two promotion favourites to go momentarily in second place, and end a fourmatch winless streak. The game was a balanced affair and keenly contested with Mqabb practically giving the game away at the end of the first when they committed a freak own goal

Lawrence Chiedozie had a good run on 20 minutes but shot wide. On 27 minutes a Michael Borg freekick was brilliantly saved by Azzopardi and from the rebound Lyden Micallef again tested the Qormi custodian. Three minutes later Lawrence Chiedozie was unlucky when his scorcher smashed against the crossbar.

Just before the break Qormi took a surprise lead when Mqabba defender Luke Vella Critien committed an incredible own goal when he headed towards his own goalkeeper, who in turn was charging out of position.

The second failed to produce scoring opportunities even though both sides produced some good football. Twenty minutes from time Lawrence Chiedozie almost sealed it for Qormi but his effort from the edge of the area went inches wide.

But Qormi’s second goal came five minutes later when Michael Camilleri scored a gem of a goal after afine run on the left flank. Seven minutes from time Mqabba should have pulled on back but Chimezie blasted over the bar from an ideal position.
