Local councils to provide local council meetings streamed online via Facebook
During a certificate award ceremony, Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Stefan Buontempo insisted on the importance of these initiatives, initiatives which had as their core values the dismantling of barriers.
Equipping residents with digital know-how leads to more and better interaction with their elected representatives, which in turn would mean that local plans and strategies proposed by the various local councils would be based on the real needs and aspirations of their communities.
“We are insisting that all local councils set up their official Facebook page. We are working hard in order to ensure that within the next few weeks, all local council meetings are streamed live on their respective Facebook page. We ought to do all that is possible to make sure that we reach out and listen to all those who wish to put forward their ideas, messages, recommendations.
“This should be our primary mission since we are all elected to be of service to our communities in order to improve their quality of life,” concluded Stefan Buontempo.
125 residents from different localities within the Northern Region successfully completed a 6-week-long course in Information Technology. The course formed part of a number of initiatives spearheaded by the government in its ambitious aim of reaching over 70% of the Maltese population’s use of such technology.
The course was delivered by TCTC. All participants were over 40, including a good number of elderly people who confirmed once more that there is no age to learning new skills.
Participants were provided with training in e-lifestyle skills and other social media technologies such as Facebook and Youtube, together with exploring possibilities of purchasing items over the internet and using communication media such as Skype.
The President of the Northern Region Jesmond Aquilina insisted that the experiment of organising such initiatives on a regional basis turned out to be successful and should be the model on which to draft future activities, activities which should aim at making a significant difference in the lives of our communities.
