I want a refund

Google search the definition of the word ‘refund’ and one will have the following answer: “pay back (money), typically to a customer who is not satisfied with goods or services bought.”

- Aaron Micallef Piccione Aaron Micallef Piccione is a PN general election candidate on the fourth district.

Now I want to analyse the above definition and compare it to the “refund” requested by the CEO of the db GROUP. First of all, let us make it clear from the start, the refund requested is for donations given by db Group to the Nationalist Party. Just saying that, also shows that by giving a donation, one is not buying a particular service or any goods, they are giving a donation, out of their own will to support an organisation or in this case, a political party. If one does not want to help that particular political party, it’s simple; do not donate or support the party in question.

With this said, one also might think that giving a donation gives the person donating the power to blackmail the party receiving the donation, by threatening them not to give further donations. This is usually done if the person or entity donating does not receive what is expected, therefore using the ‘power’ of money to buy someone. Beyond that is expecting the receiving party to “refund” all the donations made, like in the case of db Group, where the CEO requested, via SMS, that Nationalist Party Leader Simon Busuttil refund all the donations db Group had given to the Nationalist Party over the years.

But why did the db Group make this request? Why now? It’s simple – because Simon Busuttil said during his speech in Marsa that he wants the Auditor General to investigate the ITS transfer of land, since the value at which the land is being transferred does not reflect the real value of the land. The value given is simply too low.

So why did db Group ask for a “refund”? It requested a refund, on the same day of Simon Busuttil’s speech in Marsa, simply because the ITS land is being transferred to db Group. Would the db Group have requested a refund if the land was being transferred to a competitor? Or would they have supported Simon Busuttil’s request for the Auditor General to investigate? I think you can come up with the answer to that yourself.

So why is the db Group unhappy with the service provided by the Nationalist Party? Because they are not happy with Simon Busuttil’s honesty. Simon Busuttil did not care about db Group’s donations. He cared about our country, and no one was going to shut his mouth or the mouths of anyone within the Nationalist Party just because someone is giving a donation, no matter how small or big that donation is. We are here to offer a service to our country and ensure a better quality of life for its citizens, not to sell ourselves for the gain of a clique.

Politics is about making people’s lives better, not about being influenced, in the decisions you take, by money. Today, more than ever, the country needs the Nationalist Party to be in government, to save our country, before it’s too late. We need to clean up the mess left behind over the past four years, and this can only be done if we trust Simon Busuttil as our future Prime Minister.

Simon Busuttil did not care about db Group’s donations. He cared about our country, and no one was going to shut his mouth or the mouths of anyone within the Nationalist Party just because someone is giving a donation, no matter how small or big that donation is
