Sock, Isner lead US against Kyrgios, Australia in Davis Cup

-

Jack Sock, John Isner, Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson will represent the United States against host Australia in the Davis Cup quarterfinals on April 7-9.

US captain Jim Courier announced his roster yesterday.

Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt's squad is Nick Kyrgios, Jordan Thompson, Sam Groth and John Peers.

No. 16 Kyrgios and No. 17 Sock are the only players on either team ranked in the ATP's top 20.

The best-of-five series will be played on an outdoor hard court in Brisbane.

The US leads Australia 26-20 in their Davis Cup meetings, including a victory by the Americans in last year's first round.

Nadal won't play for Spain in Davis Cup quarterfinals

Rafael Nadal will not play in the Davis Cup quarterfinals when Spain faces Serbia next week.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion was not in the team announced by Spain captain Conchita Martinez yesterday. No reason was given.

Also absent was Spain's secondranked player, Roberto Bautista Agut.

Spain will be led by world No. 19 Pablo Carreno Busta, who will be joined by Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Marcel Granollers, and double specialist Marc Lopez.

Spain will play the hard-court tie against Serbia from April 7-9 in Belgrade. The five-time champion is trying to make the semifinals for the first time since 2012.

Nadal missed the Davis Cup tie against Croatia last month because of fatigue following his five-set loss to Roger Federer in the Australian Open final. Doctors recommended time off for Nadal because he had played a significant number of matches following a four-month layoff due to a wrist injury.

The seventh-ranked Nadal is in the Miami Open fourth round this week.

Bautista Agut, also through to the Miami fourth round, withdrew from Indian Wells a few weeks ago because of an abdominal muscle injury.

Tsonga and Gasquet to miss Davis Cup quarterfinal

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet will miss France's Davis Cup quarterfinal series against Britain next month.

France captain Yannick Noah said yesterday that Tsonga is lacking competition and not ready to play following the birth of his first child. Gasquet is still recovering after appendix surgery.

"Jo is out and Richard is just gradually resuming training. He won't be competitive before about 15 days," Noah said on a conference call.

Gael Monfils could also miss the clay-court series scheduled for Rouen from April 7 because of problems to his knee, Achilles tendon and toe. Monfils has been included in the team as a replacement alongside Nicolas Mahut, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Gilles Simon and Lucas Pouille.

"According to Gael's doctor and to his physiotherapist, he could start working again by the end of the week," Noah said.

Noah had left Monfils out of his squad to face Japan in the first round after he blamed him for a perceived lack of investment. Noah said he has spoken with Monfils since their public spat, and that the 11th-ranked player gave him guarantees about his commitment to the France team.

"Gael says he has the desire to play, and I told him I believe him," Noah said. "He is a good Davis Cup player, I want him in the best psychological and physical shape."

Britain captain Leon Davis said earlier yesterday that top-ranked Andy Murray will also be missing because of an elbow injury.

It will be the first time that France and Britain face off on clay since the British team won 3-2 in the Europe semifinals in 1978 at Roland Garros.

Injured Murray to miss Davis Cup quarterfinals

Andy Murray will miss Britain's Davis Cup quarterfinal series against France next month because of an elbow injury.

Murray sustained the injury in practice and also recently withdrew from the Miami Open.

Britain captain Leon Davis says "not having Andy in the side is obviously a big loss to our team, but most importantly we all wish him well for a speedy recovery back to full health and fitness."

Dan Evans, Kyle Edmund, Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot will line up for Britain on clay in Rouen from April 7-9.
