Full-time, parttime jobs up 5% in October

In October 2016, both registered full-time employment and parttime employment as a primary job increased by 5.0% when compared to the correspond­ing month of the previous year, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

Gainfully Occupied Population: October 2016

Administra­tive data provided by Jobsplus show that, over a period of one year, the labour supply (excluding part-timers) increased by 3.9 %, reaching 186,336. This was mainly attributed to an increase in the fulltime gainfully occupied population (8,773) and a drop in registered unemployme­nt (1,750).

Registered full-time employment

In October 2016, Arts, entertainm­ent and recreation and Administra­tive and support service activities contribute­d mostly to the increase in employment, compared to October 2015. Registered full-time employment in the private sector went up by 8,155 persons to 138,001. Public sector full-time employment increased by 618 persons to 45,169.

The number of persons registered as full-time self-employed rose by 457 when compared to October 2015, while the number of persons registered as employees increased by 8,316 persons. Full-time employment for males and females went up by nearly 4.0% and 6.9% respective­ly over 2015 levels.

Registered part-time employment

Registered part-time employment in October 2016 went up by 5.2% when compared to a year earlier. The sectors that contribute­d most to the overall increase were wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycle­s Transporta­tion and storage and Profession­al, scientific and technical activities.

The number of part-timers who also held a full-time job amounted to 24,311 up by 5.6% (+1,281 persons) when compared to the correspond­ing month in 2015. Employed persons whose part-time job was their primary occupation totalled 35,373 up by 5.0% (+1,690 persons) when compared to 2015.
