Looking back on one’s life experiences is always a sobering exercise. Unlike Frank Sinatra, I would not fall for the presumptuous ‘I did it my way’. This hopefullyenables one to give a more objective opinion on what pitfalls to avoid and what opportunities to embrace.
Even the lofty injunction of ‘Carpe Diem’ that freely translated means ‘seize the day’ has to be taken with a pinch of salt. However, its positive interpretation is sound as it encourages one to appreciate each day and make the most of it in as positive a manner as possible.
The best advice is therefore to cultivate a sense of gratitude and to appreciate the miracle of life. A 14-year-old today is at a bigger disadvantage than one fifty odd years ago. The bustle, noise and subtle, though relentless, intrusion of the media and internet robs one of precious time for reflection and self-awareness which I consider the key to upholding one’s common sense and sanity.
I strongly believe that a healthy approach to one’s diet and exercise make the most of one’s physical health. Yet, one should avoid the pitfalls of narcissism and obsession with one’s self-preservation that leads to unbridled egoism.
I also strongly recommend the importance of a good diet of reading and good use of the media. Just as healthy food is good for the body equally the reading of books and reviews of calibre is a liberating empowering experience, strengthening a profound human desire to seek the truth in all things.
Above all, cultivate the Faith of our fathers as it enriches and illuminates your outlook on life as it unfolds. This will enable you to tackle the challenges that life may bring your way.
