PL, PN spar on Mosta underground car park plans
The PL yesterday accused the PN of making a U-turn and wanting to scrap plans to build an underground car park in the locality, but the PN insisted that it was in favour of such a project, as long as it was not so close to the historic rotunda.
Addressing a press conference in the afternoon, PL councillor Alex Muscat said the PN-led council had voted against the project. This after mayor Ivan Bartolo filed a motion which went against the position taken by his predecessor, Edwin Vassallo. Mr Muscat said residents would suffer the consequences of this pique that existed between two PN candidates
Mr Muscat said the PL fully supported the project, which would not only be of benefit to residents but also to the commercial community. The project, for which two bids have been received, will also include open spaces, a larger playground and a traffic management plan, which would decrease congestion.
Reacting, the PN said that “Keith Schembri’s assistant” (Mr Muscat) was lying. The PN insisted that it was in favour of an underground car park as long as it was not constructed right next to the rotunda.
The only option so far was to dig under the road next to the church, with all the risks that this entailed. This was not right, the PN said, and people deserved much better.
The PN is insisting that other sites should be identified, including two sites that are not so close to the church.
