School’s project
Earlier this year, the Malta Darts Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Education launched an innovative schools project aimed to assist students in improving their mathematical skills whilst having fun practicing the sport of darts.
The pilot project carrying the name of “Learning mathematics through darts” is currently being delivered at the St Ignatius College Secondary School in Handaqhas seen male and female students aged between 1113 years’ working on mathematical equations; mental mathematics and more whilst practicing darts under the guidance of the associations members.
Accompanying the students during these sessions is Ms Angela Xuereb, a mathematics teacher at the school, and she had the following comments about the project; “For the last 12 weeks, a group of students have been participating in the Darts mid-day break activity. It has provided the students the opportunity to participate in a challenging game, that requires a high level of skill, accuracy and a steady hand.
“While playing, they had the opportunity to work on building teamwork skills, improving hand and eye co-ordination, enhancing the ability to concentrate and ameliorate mathematical skills. It has also helped students to boost their confidence through increased success in the game”.
The association will be looking to build on this project in the coming years and expand this project into more schools and clubs.
